Simple Ways to Organise & Maintain Your Wardrobe

Trying to re-do your wardrobe can be overwhelming. Where does one even begin? The truth is, it will be a big job – knowing and accepting this is your first step.

For those who have come to terms with the challenge ahead of you, here are some simple tips for making your end result look even more beautiful.

1.     Switch to all the same type of hangers. There are a number of reasons as to why I recommend this. Firstly, it will allow your closet to present as ultra aesthetically pleasing. If you are going through the trouble to declutter your closet, you want the result to look as cohesive as possible. The other, and more important reason, is because by changing your hangers you are forced to look at and think about every article of clothing you currently have hanging. Do you still need it? Does it still fit? If it does not “spark joy” a la Miss Marie Kondo, get rid of it.

2.     Colour coding and categorizing. Think about what system works for you. Do you prefer colour coding your entire wardrobe, regardless of what type of clothing is mixed together? So all your black jeans, dresses and jumpers have a section to themselves? Or maybe you prefer to categorise. Putting all the same articles of clothing together. Whatever floats your boat and makes it easier for you to know where everything is, and keep your system maintained.

3.     Storage. If all your jean shorts are shoved in a drawer and you can’t see what you have, utilize one section of your wardrobe for some pretty boxes that you can pop your smaller items into like crops, gym pants, underwear etc. Make sure to pick boxes that are big enough to fit what you need in there, and suits your desired closet aesthetic. Another storage tip if you have a longer or larger wardrobe, is to create more shelving by adding a bench into your closet. You can pick one up for cheap at Ikea or Kmart. This gives you additional levels to work with and makes efficient use of your existing closet space.

4.     Aesthetics. This one is optional, but a nice touch. If you have the space for it, either a spare section or level - pick some of your favourite accessories and create a little area for your viewing pleasure. Maybe it’s one or two bags with a pop of colour and a small jar filled with statement rings. Add a little succulent for extra points, or a cloth bag of dried lavender. This feature will have you smiling every time you throw open your wardrobe doors.

5.     Maintain, maintain, maintain! There is absolutely no point in going through all this trouble if you are not going to maintain your closet. That’s why it’s important to select a system that works for you. Try the one touch method. When changing clothes, make it a habit to pop whatever it was you were wearing back onto its hanger or straight into your laundry basket. This negates the need to have to clean up excessively and will keep your wardrobe and space around it looking consistently neat.
